Taking Care
of a New Baby
Taking care of a new baby can be one of life’s most rewarding experiences. It also presents many challenges. Even if you have been a parent before, there will undoubtedly be times when you are not sure what to do. Trust your instincts and if you are worried about your baby's health, call your baby's doctor. Use the links below to review some common health concerns.
There is no typical day with a new baby, although in time, you will come to be the expert on your baby, his or her likes and dislikes and daily routine. Don't expect to be able to make a schedule – new babies eat, sleep and cry a lot but not necessarily in a predictable order!
It can be very disturbing to hear your baby cry, but this is the only way your child has to tell you that he or she is unhappy. The link below will offer you some tips for soothing your baby.
Diapers are another constant of life with a newborn. There are many options, including disposable diapers and cloth diaper services. If you are unsure about how to diaper your baby, ask your midwife or ask the nurse before you leave the hospital. When changing your baby’s diaper after a bowel movement, wash your baby's bottom with soap and warm water before putting on the clean diaper. And don't forget to wash your own hands thoroughly following each diaper change. Keep a bottle of hand lotion nearby!
